LESSON 01 / Beginner

Understand the IFS Cloud landscape

5 min readConcept draftNot yet reviewed or tested in an IFS environment

You will be able to separate three ideas: the IFS Cloud platform, your organization’s customer solution, and the interface a person uses to work with it.

Prerequisites: none. You can complete the exercise without an IFS environment.

The platform provides shared capabilities for building, running, managing, and adapting IFS Cloud. A customer solution combines the selected IFS components with the configurations and customizations used by a particular customer. The interface is how a user reaches those capabilities: for example, IFS Cloud Web or a mobile app.

A Lobby is an overview page within the web experience. Seeing a Lobby does not mean every user has the same processes, components, or access. These distinctions are introduced in the official IFS platform fundamentals.

Imagine a fictional business, Northstar Services. A coordinator checks an overview before working on an assigned task. A consultant is asked to make the coordinator’s page easier to use.

Before changing anything, the consultant writes down:

  1. Who is doing the work?
  2. Which business outcome matters?
  3. Which page is involved?
  4. Which environment and release will be used to evaluate the change?

The exercise starts with a person and a task because a page change is useful only if it supports the work.

Choose a process you know. Write one sentence for each of these prompts:

  • The person doing the work is…
  • Their desired outcome is…
  • The interface or page they use is…
  • One question I still need to answer is…
See an example answer

“A service coordinator needs to identify work that requires attention. They use an overview in the web interface. I still need to confirm which page and access permissions apply in our training environment.”

Notice that the answer records uncertainty rather than guessing a page name.

You should now have a short description of a person, a task, and an interface. If you have only a list of software features, add the business outcome that makes those features useful.

Common confusion: two people using IFS Cloud may work with different solution components and permissions. Check the context before assuming their screens should match.

Cleanup: none; this is a written exercise. No system changes are required.
