LESSON 13 / Beginner

Shape a small data query

6 min readConcept draftNot yet reviewed or tested in an IFS environment

Understand selection, filtering, ordering, and result limits.

Prerequisites: IFS Cloud essentials. No IFS login is needed for this written exercise. Estimated reading time excludes practice.

Selection chooses the properties returned; filtering chooses matching rows; ordering establishes their sequence; a result limit caps the returned rows. In OData these ideas are commonly expressed with $select, $filter, $orderby, and $top. Supported behavior must be checked against the actual service.

Our fictional dataset has Id, Status, and Amount. We want at most two open items, ordered by Id, returning only Id and Amount. The example below is a learning expression, not an IFS endpoint.

  1. Specify which rows qualify before choosing the displayed columns.
  2. Choose a predictable order, including a unique tie-breaker where needed.
  3. Apply a small result limit while exploring.
  4. Follow the service’s documented continuation mechanism when a complete result requires more pages.

Use the browser query lab to find two Open records. Select Id and Amount, order by Id, and set the limit to 2.

The simulated result contains DEMO-001 and DEMO-003 with amounts 120 and 80. Changing the selected fields changes the columns, not which records match. The lab does not implement a complete OData parser and sends no request to an IFS system.

Assuming a limited first page represents the entire dataset, or treating filtering as a replacement for authorization.

Expected result: a written answer that explains your decision and identifies what still needs confirmation in the actual environment.

Cleanup: none; this exercise changes no IFS data.
