Is the Excel Migration Add-in actually safe and worthwhile to roll out for teams doing a lot of repetitive manual data entry, and what are its real strengths and limitations in practice?

Answer

In practice, the Excel Add-in enforces the same permission model as the standard IFS client — a user can only do through the add-in what their permission set already allows them to do in the regular client, so it isn't an inherent data-destruction risk beyond whatever access those users already have. It includes a validation step that checks data correctness before actually executing any changes, which is genuinely helpful, though this validation can produce false failures specifically in parent-then-child migrations, for example loading a Purchase Order header and then its lines in the same pass, since the child-record validation runs before the parent header record actually exists yet in that same load. It's best suited for repetitive bulk uploads or data-cleanse work, for example exporting the right columns via a Quick Report, pasting them into the tool, and reloading, rather than one-off highly complex jobs. One additional practical advantage over the traditional in-IEE Migration Job: each Excel Add-in session creates its own separate load table, rather than sharing one common load table, so multiple users can run migrations concurrently without risk of one user's load data colliding with or overwriting another's.
