A file-transfer log/staging table (like an external-file-transaction table) has grown extremely large, and the standard cleanup process doesn't seem to be purging it.

Check whether the cleanup process's "remove all load states" option is enabled and whether "remove completely" is ticked on the relevant template definition — without both set appropriately, the standard purge process can leave records behind indefinitely; also expect a large backlog purge to be a genuinely heavy, long-running single transaction, so plan a maintenance window rather than running it live.
