Is there a rule-of-thumb size threshold for when document repository storage should move from BLOBs inside the Oracle database to an external file server instead, given a large total volume of documents and/or large individual files?

Answer

There's no fixed universal size threshold for this — the practical signal to watch for is operational rather than a specific number: once backups start taking noticeably longer, or other database performance issues start correlating with document-storage volume, that's the point to transition to an external file/FTP repository for documents instead of continuing to grow the database with BLOB-stored files. One practitioner's own experience found no significant disadvantages after making that transition once their database had roughly doubled in size and backups had become genuinely problematic — treat sustained backup-duration or performance degradation as the real trigger rather than trying to pick a specific GB threshold in advance.
