For a custom attribute meant to supply an email address, call Comm_Method_API.Get_Value('PERSON', person_id, Comm_Method_Code_API.Decode('E_MAIL')) as the server method — substituting in the relevant substitution variable for the person ID (e.g. &OLD:MAIN_CONTACT_ID for a record's main contact). Also keep in mind a plain SELECT statement isn't valid as a custom attribute's server method — it needs to be a function call like this one, not a bare query.
