Connecting to IFS from a standalone Java application via the Java Access Provider (constructing a Server object and setting its connection string) throws a null pointer exception, even though the JAR files are correctly referenced and a JDBC-style connection string (`jdbc:oracle:thin:@//host:port/service`) is used.

Answer

The Java Access Provider connects to IFS through the IFS middleware server, not through a direct database/JDBC connection — using a JDBC connection string is the actual problem. Set the connection string to the IFS application server's own URL and port instead, in the form the Access Provider expects for its middleware-based connection, rather than a database JDBC connection string, and the connection should establish correctly.
