On IFS9, predating native REST destination-type support, is there a way to send a JSON payload (rather than XML) in an outbound Application Message over HTTP, without access to IFS Developer Studio to build a proper custom transformer?

Answer

Route the outbound HTTP Application Message through an XSL-based Transformer that converts the standard XML application message into the desired JSON structure before sending, rather than requiring Developer Studio to build a native transformer. A standard, generic XML-to-JSON XSL stylesheet, a well-known XSLT technique not specific to IFS at all, can be duplicated into a new IFS Transformer object and attached to the Routing Address, whether the destination is a file output or an HTTP connector, to reshape the outbound XML into JSON entirely through configuration, with no Developer Studio access needed.
