For an Apps9/Oracle 12c database, should Automatic or Manual Shared Memory Management be used for the SGA and PGA — is one blanket choice correct for both?

Answer

No — IFS's own technical documentation recommends different approaches for each: for the SGA specifically, IFS recommends Manual Shared Memory Management (individually tuning each SGA memory pool) rather than fully Automatic (MEMORY_TARGET/MEMORY_MAX_TARGET), based on IFS's own testing showing that Oracle's automatic management tends to over-favor the shared pool over the buffer cache over time, which can degrade performance for an IFS-Applications-style workload. For PGA specifically, by contrast, IFS does recommend Automatic PGA Memory Management (via PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET and WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY) across all Oracle 12c environments. So the correct configuration is a mix — Manual for SGA, Automatic for PGA — rather than applying one blanket Automatic-or-Manual choice to both memory areas.
