IEE throws 'A generic error occurred in GDI+' (a System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException inside .NET's Graphics/DataGrid rendering code) while using a data-heavy screen like Inventory Part in Stock — what causes this and how do you fix it?

Answer

This points to Windows running low on GDI handles rather than an IFS-specific bug — GDI+ (used for rendering things like grid cell measurement) relies on a limited pool of GUI handles shared across every process running on that Windows machine, and heavy data-grid usage combined with other open applications can exhaust that shared pool. Check the handle count in Task Manager's Performance tab to see if it's unusually high compared to what's typical for that machine when this happens. There isn't a direct configuration fix for this — the practical mitigation is reducing the number of other applications running concurrently on the same machine, which frees up GDI handles for IEE to use.
