Is there a way to have a BPA workflow run automatically on a daily schedule — for example, to automatically close Business Opportunities or Sales Quotations once they pass their expiration date — given workflows can't be directly scheduled and FND_WORKFLOW_CONNECTION_API.START_WORKFLOW isn't a supported way to trigger one from a database task?

Answer

Workflows genuinely can't be scheduled directly or triggered via FND_WORKFLOW_CONNECTION_API.START_WORKFLOW from a database task — that path isn't supported. The working pattern instead is: schedule a Report to run daily (via its own Scheduled Database Task-style scheduling), then create a Custom Event that fires when that specific report prints in Report Archive/Print Manager, filtering on that report's unique Schedule ID so it only reacts to your daily scheduled run and not every ad-hoc print of the same report. Attach an Event Action to that Custom Event which triggers your workflow. This effectively gives your workflow a daily schedule, using the report's own native scheduling as the timer mechanism workflows themselves don't have.
