An exported database-task delivery file (a `.ins` file) needs to be deployed from a test environment into production for the first time — is this run through PL/SQL, and if so with what command?

Answer

Deploy a .ins file by running it directly through SQL*Plus against the target environment: sqlplus ifsapp/<password>@<tnsname_for_environment> @"file.ins". Before running it, it's worth prefixing the script with a few SQL*Plus session settings for visibility and safety — SET SQLBLANKLINES ON (so multi-line statements with blank lines parse correctly), SET SERVEROUTPUT ON SIZE UNLIMITED and SET ECHO ON (so you can see the commands and their output as they run), SET FEEDBACK ON, and SPOOL out.txt (to capture a log of the run for later review) — and appending COMMIT; followed by EXIT at the end, to ensure the changes are actually committed and the session closes cleanly. As a broader practice, it's worth having a genuinely separate Test environment, distinct from Dev, specifically so this kind of deployment script gets exercised there first, rather than being run for the very first time directly against Production.
