IFS's own documentation and installation guidance describes using an Oracle multitenant (container database plus pluggable database) setup for IFS10, but since IFS only supports one PDB per CDB, is there any real advantage to multitenant over a traditional single-instance database?

Answer

On tracks where IFS only supports one Pluggable Database per Container Database, there's no significant functional advantage from IFS's own perspective to using the multitenant architecture over a traditional single-instance database — IFS's documentation using a multitenant example doesn't itself constitute a recommendation to prefer it over single-instance. Multitenant architecture becomes more genuinely useful from an administrative standpoint once, or if, IFS ever supports multiple PDBs per CDB. In the meantime, some customers going live on a multitenant setup have found routine DBA tasks like backups, database cloning, and point-in-time refresh somewhat more complicated than on single-instance, though PDB-based database refresh specifically can offer real advantages once that workflow is understood.
