Mid-project, a newer release becomes available while our upgrade build home is already set to an older target version — do we need to redo anything to pick up the latest patches?

Answer

Generally no extra steps are needed as long as no development has been committed against the existing build home yet — download the newly created build home for the current target and start the upgrade process from it, and you'll get whatever patches R&D has released since the original build home was created.
