Why can't I add a custom field to a screen that's based on a virtual logical unit (LU), and is there a workaround?

Virtual LUs don't persist their own data, so they can't carry custom fields the way a normal entity-backed LU can — this is a structural limitation, not a missing permission or configuration you're overlooking, and it applies whether you're trying to do it through Page Designer or by other configuration-only means.
